IYT Awarded $755,000 Grant from AmeriCorps

Sacramento, CA: Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc (IYT) formally launched its new partnership with Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) AmeriCorps with a five-day training for 68 AmeriCorps Members in South Sacramento. This past summer, IYT received $754,082 grant from California Volunteers to help support IYT programs in Sacramento County, San Joaquin County (specifically the city of Stockton) and our local IYT community college and university students.

AmeriCorps is a volunteer service program supported by the U.S. federal government, engaging adults in public service work with a goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. California’s AmeriCorps program is administered by California Volunteers (CV), a public agency for the state of California. CV addresses state and community challenges by investing in high impact service solutions, while leveraging public, private, and nonprofit resources.

AmeriCorps service members will serve IYT students, ages 12-24 through IYT’s six core services including, (1) student development, (2) college tours, (3) tutoring, (4) parent engagement, (5) internships, and (6) mentorship. IYT is one of the only programs in the country to provide services for students beginning in 7th grade until college graduation specifically for young men of color.

In California, only 5% of African-American and 16% of Latinx males possess an associate’s or bachelor’s degree while these groups combined make up 75% of the male population. This is due in large part to the robust school-to-prison pipeline which funnels students of color out of schools and into the criminal legal system. This pipeline is perpetuated by the disproportionate use of harsh discipline school policies, low expectations and poor educational quality young men of color receive.

IYT seeks to break the school-to-prison pipeline by helping young men of color get to and through college. By dramatically improving the educational outcomes of young men of color, not only will communities be safer and healthier but, schools will serve as factories of young leaders who can return to their community and uplift the rising generations.

IYT has already significantly affected the Sacramento community. One-hundred percent (100%) of IYT students graduate from high school compared to 68.7% of black males and 75.6 of Latinx males in California and ninety percent (90%) of IYT students attend college compared to only 55.6% of African American and 60.9% of Latinx high school graduates.
