Month in Review: The Power of Support

February at Herbert Hoover Middle School was a testament to the power of individualized support. Whether it was one-on-one tutoring in study hall or school-wide recognition at an assembly, our Brothers are proving what happens when you create an environment of accountability and care.

Brotherhood Friday: Our Space, Our Community

During Brotherhood Friday, our brothers relaxed and watched Are We There Yet? While enjoying nachos after a long week of hard work, and positive behavior during programming.

Hard work and positive behavior deserve to be rewarded! During a recent Brotherhood Friday, Brothers Angel, Carlos, Mark, Jaycob, Faith, and Farrel gathered in our shared space to relax and watch Are We There Yet? while enjoying a well-earned plate of nachos. They laughed, joked, and bonded in a way that reflects genuine connection and comfort. "Our Space, Our Community" captures exactly how this environment fosters a sense of belonging. It is a space built on strong relationships and consistent support, showing that Brotherhood extends to how we celebrate our wins together.

Mentorship in Action: Individualized Academic Support

Gustavo provides focused, individualized support during study hall, meeting Angel where he is, and helping him overcome academic challenges. His encouragement and dedication create a space where students feel motivated and empowered to succeed.

Behind every great student is a mentor willing to meet them where they are. During our after-school study halls, our IYT mentors are doing exactly that. Gustavo provides focused support, helping Brother Angel overcome academic challenges. His encouragement creates a space where Angel feels motivated and empowered to succeed. Meanwhile, Omar works individually with Brother Bobby, patiently guiding him through assignments and helping him build his confidence. This steady, one-on-one support ensures every student feels seen, heard, and capable of success.

Academic Achievement: Brother Farrel

We are incredibly proud to celebrate 7th-grader Farrel Akpaloo, who not only earned A Honor Roll, but was also recognized as Student of the Second Quarter! Farrel received this massive honor during a school-wide assembly. He was specially chosen by the school staff for his outstanding effort, dedication, and positive attitude. Farrel’s hard work and commitment to his studies make him a true example of academic excellence.

Brother of the Month

Brother Victor, 8th grader at Hoover Middle School

Brother Victor

8th Grade

Victor is making waves as this month’s Brother of the Month! He is a perfect example of what it means to be a part of the IYT Brotherhood. Victor shows up every single day—even on days without after-school programming—and has only missed one session since the start of the school year. He goes above and beyond by meeting with his mentor during 6th period to complete assignments and stay on track toward his goals.

His hard work has not gone unnoticed. Principal Rivard personally emailed Miss Mahogany to give Victor a special shoutout for his incredible improvement since joining IYT! Congratulations, Victor! IYT is lucky to have a student like you.
