Month in Review: Authenticity & Action

February at Hogan Middle School was about dropping the act and putting in the real work. From deep emotional reflections in our workshops to highly focused academic sessions, our Brothers are learning that genuine growth requires vulnerability, accountability, and intentional effort.

Life Skills: The Masks We Wear

Behind every confident face, there’s often a story that isn’t always seen. This month, our Brothers participated in a deeply meaningful workshop titled “The Masks We Wear.”

The session created a safe space for students to reflect on the different "masks" they wear at school, at home, or in their communities. Through guided discussion, many shared how pressure, expectations, and stereotypes influence how they present themselves to the world.

The Takeaway: The conversation emphasized that while masks can sometimes feel protective, real growth is built on authenticity and trust. Students were reminded that strength is not only shown through toughness, but through honesty and self-awareness.

Academic Achievement: The Study Hall Hub

Our study hall has officially become a hub of dedication and teamwork!

During recent sessions, the room was filled with purposeful energy as students worked both independently and collaboratively to prepare for upcoming assessments. Rather than treating study hall as downtime, the Brothers have embraced it as an opportunity to reinforce their academic habits. Many students took the initiative to ask questions and support one another, proving that intentional effort leads to meaningful growth.

Brotherhood Culture: Open Gym Takeover

To balance out the hard work in the classroom, IYT students at Hogan Middle School had the chance to take over the basketball gym for a special Open Gym session!

The space provided a positive environment for staying active and strengthening peer connections. Throughout the session, students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and mutual encouragement. These moments outside of the classroom are vital—they reinforce the value of wellness and help students grow their leadership skills in a real-world setting.

MLK Day Service

IYT Bay Area had the pleasure of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service. We partnered with California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, and the City of Richmond, California to restore Parchester Park in Richmond, CA. The IYT team did painting, gardening and filled the playground with fresh mulch to give the Parchester community a welcoming and safe space. It is with gratitude and pride that I am encouraged to say, "We are always stronger and better when we work together and serve."

Brother of the Month

Brother Charles, at Hogan Middle School.

Brother Charles

We are incredibly proud to announce that Charles has earned the Spartan Student of the Month award at Hogan Middle School! This honor reflects Charles’s consistent dedication to excellence and his strong work ethic. In the classroom, Charles demonstrates impressive focus—consistently completing assignments, participating in discussions, and holding himself to a high academic standard. Beyond his grades, Charles exemplifies the core values of IYT leadership. Salute to Charles for representing what it means to be a true Spartan Scholar!
