Month in Review: Drafting the Future

January at Thomas Downey High School was all about intentionality. We started the semester by giving our Brothers the space to reflect on their long-term aspirations, and then gave them the practical tools they need to actually achieve them.

Brotherhood Culture: A Letter to Myself

IYT launched the year with "Letter to Myself," a personalized workshop giving Brothers the chance to reflect on their personal growth and write a letter to their future selves. These letters are collected and safely stored, only to be returned to the Brothers when they graduate from high school. This activity serves as a highly emotional and meaningful reminder of their goals, progress, and the aspirations they held when they first started their journey.

College & Career Readiness: Direction > Pressure

Brothers are walking along the path they created, staying within the paper.

It is easy for high school students to feel overwhelmed by the future. In this workshop, Brothers explored the vital difference between pressure (feeling forced) and direction (moving with purpose). Students practiced teamwork and planning, learning how to identify a path that aligns with their unique interests and strengths. The workshop heavily emphasized using college as a tool to expand their opportunities and make intentional, confident choices for their next chapter.

Brother of the Month

Brother Antwain, 12th grade, at Thomas Downey High School.

Brother Antwain

12th Grade

Antwain is being recognized for his remarkable dedication both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities! Since joining IYT in the 10th grade, Antwain has been a pillar of the Brotherhood. He consistently shows up for after-school programming and field trips, all while successfully balancing sports with a strong academic performance (maintaining mostly A’s and B’s!).

As a senior, Antwain steps up as a leader when needed, supporting his younger peers and setting a positive example of what it means to finish strong. Shoutout to Antwain for his commitment, leadership, and drive as he heads toward graduation!
