Impact Update: Rio Calaveras
IYT programming at Rio Calaveras in our Central Valley region was defined this month by two powerful forces: looking outward, and looking inward.
Students were well-positioned to look outward during an inspiring trip to UC Berkeley, envisioning a future on the beautiful university campus. Simultaneously, they were encouraged to look inward during a violence prevention workshop, guided through exercises to take personal responsibility for the safety and culture of the community. Whether raising GPAs or setting standards for peer behavior, our Brothers proved they’re ready to lead.
Envisioning a Future at UC Berkeley
Students from Rio Calaveras had the incredible opportunity to explore college life up close at UC Berkeley! In total, 23 students toured the historic campus, enjoying a meal in the dining commons, and enjoying a basketball game. The major highlight of the trip was hearing from IYT alumni who current attend Berkeley, as they shared their stories and personal advice to the young scholars following in their wake.
Experiences like these are incredibly important in helping IYT Brothers understand that college is within their reach. This hands-on exposure helps motivate them to set ambitious goals, and claim the truth that they truly can meet any and all expectations they choose to set for themselves.
Students lead the charge on community safety
Last month, our students led a powerful workshop on preventing violence in the community. Centered on the theme of “Each One Teach One,” the session encouraged students to not only make positive choices for themselves but also to share those lessons with at least one other person.
Students set personal goals including:
Choosing positive friend groups
Staying engaged in school activities
Walking away from conflict
They also brainstormed solutions for the broader community, discussing how to create safer spaces for youth and the importance of speaking up when something isn't right. Our students are proving that real change starts with them, and they’re choosing peace on purpose.
