From Lived Experience to Lasting Impact: Dr. Erica Conners’ Pursuit of Excellence for Bay Area Youth
Growing up in a community marked by violence, crime, and scarce resources, Dr. Erica Conners learned a truth early on that would would define her life’s work: a young person’s future can be entirely transformed when caring adults decide to pour into them.

Today, as the Executive Director of Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) Bay Area, Dr. Conners is paying that investment forward. Across five counties and 12 distinct school sites, she leads a passionate team dedicated to disrupting systemic inequities and clearing pathways to academic achievement and long-term economic mobility for young men of color (known within IYT as “Brothers”).
The Magic Beyond the Data
For Dr. Conners, the mission of IYT expands far beyond metrics to the undeniable power of presence. “Last year I attended the first day of school at one or our middle school sites,” she recalled. “A student saw me and asked if his Program Manager was on campus. When I pointed him out, that student took off running, and two others joined him. The three of them nearly tackled their Program Manager out of sheer excitement and happiness.”
For Dr. Conners, that image captured something that the data alone could not: belonging, trust, joy, and anticipation. “They weren’t simply excited to see a familiar adult,” she explained. “They were excited to see someone who mattered to them. That is the power of consistent mentorship.”
Navigating a Divided Landscape
The Bay Area presents a stark paradox. Amid incredible regional wealth and high economic input in cities like San Francisco, local classrooms are often severely under-resourced. As school district budgets face persistent cuts, funding for vital student support programs shrinks.
To bridge this gap, Dr. Conners and her team dive deep into school communities, attending staff meetings, hosting showcases and building robust networks with four-year universities, community colleges, and corporate partners to deliver college and career access directly to students.
Internally, Dr. Conners grounds her regional team in two guiding words: Intentionality and Visibility.
“I’ve fostered a culture that revolves around the relentless pursuit of excellence,” she shared. “As we strive to be excellent, we model for our Brothers how to show up, even during challenging times. We model how to work through adversity and the importance of being a good person, while also ensuring no one on our team ever feels like they’re doing this work alone.”
The Road Ahead: A Call to Action
Looking to the next three to five years, Dr. Conners has a clear trajectory in mind: deepen IYT’s presence at existing schools, and expand to new sites to dismantle resource inequities across her region. Achieving this requires long-lasting, sustainable community investments.
