Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders: Arthur C. Turner III’s Call to Action for Minnesota
In a state celebrated for its educational and corporate resources, a glaring contradiction persists: deep-seated disparities in education, economic opportunity, and representation for young men of color. As Executive Director of IYT Minnesota, Arthur C. Turner III approaches this challenge with a strategy grounded in both systemic change and lived experience. Through intentional mentorship, high-dosage engagement, and partnerships across sectors, he and his team are building an ecosystem designed to help young men of color envision, and achieve, a future without limits.
A Vision Rooted in Lived Experience
For Turner, leading IYT Minnesota brings personal alignment to professional purpose. “I was originally drawn to IYT because its mission closely aligned with the work that has shaped my career; the holistic advancement of young people, particularly young people of color, as well as my own lived experience,” he states. “What continues to energize me is seeing our students become more motivated by what is possible, build their social capital, and begin to discover versions of themselves they may not have previously imagined.”
This ethos was on full display during IYT Minnesota’s inaugural Brotherhood Summit, which brought together more than 200 young men for a day centered around leadership, career exploration, wellness, and representation. For Turner, seeing Black male professionals connect directly with students underscored the transformative power of intentional community.
“Our young people must be able to see beyond the ceilings the world may place above them, while also having a strong floor of support, relationships, and opportunity beneath them,” says Turner. “Moments like this remind me that our impact is measured not only by academic outcomes, but also by confidence, belonging, social capital, and an expanded belief in what is possible.”
Impact by the Numbers
Since launching in the region just two years ago, IYT Minnesota has demonstrated how consistent, relationship-driven programming creates exceptional outcomes. Even when faced with broader community challenges, such as school disruptions caused by local ICE activity, Turner and his team have maintained focus on the students, providing care packages and support, and achieving impressive results including:
92% Program Retention Rate: Demonstrating deep connection and trust built with members and their families.
90% High Dosage Engagement: Ensuring consistent, meaningful contact throughout the school year
200+ Brotherhood Summit Attendees: Creating an intentional space for mentorship, career discovery, and representation
Responsive Community Care: Extending wraparound support, including care packages and emergency services during local school disruptions.
Bridging Minnesota’s Resource Gap through Collaboration
Addressing Minnesota’s stark disparity gap requires more than isolated interventions; it demands a unified ecosystem that connects institutional wealth directly where it’s needed most. “Minnesota has many resources, but the challenge is ensuring those resources, relationships, and opportunities are intentionally connected to the young men who can benefit from them most,” Turner states. “Our responsibility is to help our students access available resources, experience meaningful representation, develop a strong sense of belonging, and build clear pathways to opportunity so that their potential, and not systemic barriers, shapes their future.”
To achieve this, Turner ensures his team is able to work intentionally across sectors. “Expanding opportunity for young men of color requires strong, connected partnerships,” he explains. “We collaborate with school districts to integrate programming into the school community, with colleges and universities to expand exposure to postsecondary pathways, and with corporate and community partners to provide career, exploration, workforce development, mentorship, and financial literacy.”
As IYT Minnesota has scaled, under Turner’s leadership they’ve also worked to create inroads for individuals and organizations with a passion for supporting the mission, and the ability to connect members to meaningful resources. In his view, whether they provide funding, education, workforce opportunities, mentorship, or relationships, it’s critical that the support isn’t limited to one stage of their life, but remains available as they move from their early life to emerging professionals, community leaders, and beyond.
“Our goal is to help build an ecosystem of opportunity that supports our Brothers not only for where they are today, but for who they become tomorrow.”
Looking Ahead: Bigger Impact and Systemic Influence
As they prepare for the first graduating class of IYT Minnesota, Turner is focused on expanding reach and deepening policy and postsecondary presence across the state. “Looking ahead over the next three to five years, the goal is to serve over 600 young men of color, while continuing to strengthen the quality, consistency, and depth of our impact,” he notes. “Equally important, we must have a meaningful presence in the rooms where decisions affecting young men of color in Minnesota are taking place.”
To ensure their support doesn’t end at high school graduation, his team is simultaneously building a postsecondary assistance model that’s designed to operate alongside Brothers as they move through college and into their early careers.
A Call to Action: What Door Can You Open?
Turner knows that realizing this vision requires an all-hands-on-deck commitment from community members, corporate leaders, mentors, and donors across the state. “Everyone has a role to play in helping us achieve this vision,” he emphasizes. “That commitment can take many forms. Ultimately, we’re asking people to consider not only what they can give, but what door they can open. When we invest collectively in young people today, we are also investing in the professionals, fathers, mentors, advocates, and community leaders they will become tomorrow.”
For Turner, the mission of IYT remains deeply personal. “As a leader, there is no greater reward than supporting a mission focused on improving the lives of young people, especially those whose backgrounds and lived experiences reflect aspects of my own. That connection makes the work deeply personal and reinforces my responsibility to lead with empathy, purpose, and a commitment to expanding opportunity.”
