From the Classroom to City Hall: Stories of Change at Rio Calaveras

December in Review: Voice & Accountability

December at Rio Calaveras was a powerful testament to growth. Whether it was a 7th grader taking accountability for his GPA or a staff member taking the mic to speak to the Mayor, the theme was clear: Change happens when you decide to take action.

IYT is proud to celebrate Ricky, a Lead Mentor who recently shared his story on a national platform. Ricky was invited to speak with Josh Fryday and Mayor Fugazi about his lived experience as a young Black man growing up in Stockton. Ricky spoke candidly about navigating a high-crime environment and how IYT played a critical role in shaping his leadership. By speaking not just for himself but for countless young men whose stories go unheard, Ricky shed light on what meaningful investment looks like in our city. It was a powerful reminder to our students that their lived experiences matter and can shape the future of Stockton.

The Turnaround Ralph is proving that hard work really pays off! This 7th grader made a strong turnaround this trimester. At the start of the term, his grades were struggling, but through consistent effort—and utilizing extra help at IYT—he is now passing all of his classes. Ralph is learning to hold himself accountable, a skill that is driving his growth both academically and personally.

Life Skills: Navigating Change

Is change easy or hard? This month, IYT Brothers dove into the psychology of Change. Students explored real-life scenarios and physically chose a "side of the room" that reflected their feelings: one side representing "Easy," the other "Hard." This sparked honest conversations about the discomfort of the unknown. Through discussion, Brothers were encouraged to see change not as something to fear, but as an opportunity for growth.

The Standard Setter When it comes to leadership and confidence, Brother Jovany sets the standard. An 8th-grade second-year Brother, Jovany consistently leads by example, proudly reciting the IYT Creed and Mission from memory. He speaks openly about how IYT has helped him believe in himself, making him a powerful role model for our younger Brothers.
