December in Review: Celebration & Turnarounds

December at Johansen High School was a testament to the power of support. We ended the year by balancing the joy of the holiday season with serious reflection on what it takes to succeed. From building gingerbread houses to rebuilding GPAs, our Brothers proved that with the right mindset—and the right mentor—change is always possible.

Johansen Brothers celebrated the season in style during Brotherhood Friday! The room was filled with laughter as the group watched Home Alone, decorated ornaments, and competed in gingerbread house building. It was a wonderful way to kick off the holidays, allowing everyone to decompress and connect ahead of Winter Break.

Growth Mindset: F.A.I.L. = First Attempt In Learning

Brothers reflected on their first-semester achievements by writing them on post-it notes.

In December, Brothers participated in critical workshops focused on Growth Mindset and creating SMART Goals. We took time to celebrate achievements from the first half of the year, but also tackled the fear of failure. Students learned that failing doesn’t make them a failure as long as they learn and grow. This idea was reinforced through the acronym F.A.I.L., which stands for "First Attempt In Learning."

Brother of the Month

Brother Juan, 10th grade, at Johansen High School

Brother Juan

10th Grade

For the month of December, we are proud to highlight Juan for a remarkable academic turnaround. A sophomore who joined IYT last spring, Juan improved his GPA from 0.9 to 2.1 with the encouragement of his mentor!

He isn't stopping there—Juan is determined to achieve a minimum of a 2.5, aiming for a 3.0 to stay active in sports and strengthen his college opportunities. He is eager to explore post-high school options and participate in upcoming College Tours. His dedication, perseverance, and focus on growth are truly inspiring—way to go, Juan!
