A Message from Kimberly Smith-Russ, Ph.D
Happy New Year!
As we begin a new year, we reaffirm our commitment to developing young men of character, purpose, and leadership. Across Mississippi, our brothers are starting 2026 focused, motivated, and ready to grow—academically, socially, and personally.
This month’s newsletter highlights the progress of our scholars, the dedication of our mentors and partners, and the meaningful experiences shaping our students both in and out of the classroom. Their achievements remind us that success is built through perseverance, discipline, and the courage to rise to every challenge.
Thank you to our families, educators, and community supporters who continue to invest in our mission. Your support makes a lasting impact as we guide our young men toward a future filled with opportunity and promise.
Together, we look forward to a strong and successful year ahead.
Kimberly Smith-Russ, Ph.D. Mississippi Executive Director
Program Updates & Highlights
Jackson Public Schools: Innovation in Action
Hands-On Challenge Teaches Creativity & Resilience

Students at Jackson Public School kicked off the year with a dynamic challenge designed to test their problem-solving skills: The Paper Airplane Challenge.
The Challenge: Students were asked to design and construct a paper airplane with zero instructions or limitations, encouraging bold, independent thinking.
The Competition: The energy shifted when a target was introduced! Students competed for accuracy, refining their designs in real-time.
The Lesson: Facilitators used the activity to discuss the role of failure in personal growth. Students learned that setbacks are simply stepping stones that help strengthen resilience and build confidence.
Reimagine Prep: Learning to Fly
Life Lessons from the "Fail Forward" Workshop

Who knew a simple sheet of paper could teach profound life lessons? During the Fail Forward workshop, Reimagine Prep brothers discovered that building a paper airplane is about much more than aerodynamics—it’s a hands-on lesson in patience and teamwork.
Many brothers initially struggled with crooked folds or uneven wings, but through encouragement and a willingness to try again, they overcame the frustration.
Key Takeaway: Beyond the fun of the competition, this group walked away understanding the value of listening carefully, following directions, and supporting their peers.
The Result: Through laughter and a few "crash landings," the brothers proved that the simplest activities often carry the biggest lessons on brotherhood.
Blackburn Middle School: Culinary Leaders
5th Annual Greens Cook-Off

Blackburn Middle School recently celebrated agriculture, culture, and community at the 5th Annual Greens Cook-Off. The event engaged students in the full cycle of food—from planting and harvesting to a friendly culinary competition.
IYT was proudly represented by sixth-graders Tyler Johnson and Devin Cage. Selected by their principal for their commitment and enthusiasm, Tyler and Devin balanced creativity in the kitchen while maintaining their academic focus.
Brother Tyler: Celebrated for his creativity and innovative thinking.
Brother Devin: Known for his passion for athletics and teamwork.

Leadership Spotlight: Welcoming the Board of Advisors

Improve Your Tomorrow is proud to announce the formation of the Mississippi Board of Advisors (BOA), a dynamic group of 11 passionate leaders dedicated to guiding our mission and expanding our impact across the region.
The BOA is led by Chair Dedria Wheaten and Co-Chair Jasmine Thornton, whose leadership and vision have already set the tone for this exciting new chapter. Since their first meeting in October, the Board has been instrumental in driving strategy. Chair Wheaten notably served as a featured speaker at the recent Kick-Off event, inspiring students and families as we launched the program.
Strategic Focus: Looking ahead to early 2026, the BOA is spearheading a Parent Engagement Initiative designed to deepen connections between families and the resources IYT provides.
"Our Board of Advisors represents the best of what community leadership can achieve. Their wisdom and dedication will help us expand opportunities for young men of color and ensure that every Brother has the support to thrive." — Dr. Kimberly Smith-Russ
