IYT Mississippi Executive Briefing: January 2026

From the Desk of the Executive Director

A Message from Kimberly Smith-Russ, Ph.D

Happy New Year!

As we begin a new year, we reaffirm our commitment to developing young men of character, purpose, and leadership. Across Mississippi, our brothers are starting 2026 focused, motivated, and ready to grow—academically, socially, and personally.

This month’s newsletter highlights the progress of our scholars, the dedication of our mentors and partners, and the meaningful experiences shaping our students both in and out of the classroom. Their achievements remind us that success is built through perseverance, discipline, and the courage to rise to every challenge.

Thank you to our families, educators, and community supporters who continue to invest in our mission. Your support makes a lasting impact as we guide our young men toward a future filled with opportunity and promise.

Together, we look forward to a strong and successful year ahead.

Kimberly Smith-Russ, Ph.D. Mississippi Executive Director

Jackson Public Schools: Innovation in Action

Hands-On Challenge Teaches Creativity & Resilience

IYT Brothers participate in the Paper Airplane Challenge.

Students at Jackson Public School kicked off the year with a dynamic challenge designed to test their problem-solving skills: The Paper Airplane Challenge.

  • The Challenge: Students were asked to design and construct a paper airplane with zero instructions or limitations, encouraging bold, independent thinking.

  • The Competition: The energy shifted when a target was introduced! Students competed for accuracy, refining their designs in real-time.

  • The Lesson: Facilitators used the activity to discuss the role of failure in personal growth. Students learned that setbacks are simply stepping stones that help strengthen resilience and build confidence.

Life Lessons from the "Fail Forward" Workshop

Who knew a simple sheet of paper could teach profound life lessons? During the Fail Forward workshop, Reimagine Prep brothers discovered that building a paper airplane is about much more than aerodynamics—it’s a hands-on lesson in patience and teamwork.

Many brothers initially struggled with crooked folds or uneven wings, but through encouragement and a willingness to try again, they overcame the frustration.

  • Key Takeaway: Beyond the fun of the competition, this group walked away understanding the value of listening carefully, following directions, and supporting their peers.

  • The Result: Through laughter and a few "crash landings," the brothers proved that the simplest activities often carry the biggest lessons on brotherhood.
