Building Villages, Building Leaders: Sylvan Middle School’s Gingerbread Showdown

December in Review: Creativity & Accountability

December at Sylvan Middle School was a mix of high-energy fun and serious reflection. We believe that a strong brotherhood is built on two things: shared joy and shared responsibility. From "baking show" style competitions to quiet moments of self-reflection in the mirror, our Brothers ended the year understanding that they are responsible for their own growth—and for the vibe of the community they are building.

Team Building: The Gingerbread Village Competition

Leading up to Winter Break, students took part in a high-energy, "baking show-style" challenge! Working in teams, Brothers designed and built their own gingerbread villages. But it wasn't just about the candy—each team had to present their village in a 10-minute showcase. This strengthened communication, creativity, and public speaking skills while fueling some friendly competition.

Leadership: The Mirror "I Am Responsible"

This month, Brothers explored leadership through activities that encouraged deep accountability. They "tagged" one another with leadership qualities they see in their peers and helped create a classroom space that serves as a daily reminder of their standards. By looking in the mirror each day, students are encouraged to reflect on their choices and remember that they are responsible for their own outcomes.

Brotherly Love: Unwinding After Hard Work

Sometimes, the most important part of the week is simply being together. Brother Darius kicked off our "Brotherhood Friday" by leading the Creed, setting the tone for the afternoon. After a week of focused work in study hall, students enjoyed well-earned time playing games and unwinding. These moments of unstructured connection are vital for strengthening the bonds of our community.

Brother Juan has been an amazing addition to IYT this year. He shows up to programming consistently and brings an enthusiasm that the whole room can feel. He is always on track during study hall and encourages his Brothers by helping them with their homework. His consistency, positive attitude, and willingness to help others make him a strong example within the brotherhood.

I have a passion for making changes in my community. I believe the best way to fight against systemic oppression is through advocacy on a community level and individual level. My experiences motivate me to work towards dismantling the school to prison pipeline that impacts young men of color in our country.
