IYT Thomas Downey Impact Update: November 2025

Updated: 17 hours ago

November in Review: Exposure & Ownership

This month at Thomas Downey High School was about taking ownership—ownership of future possibilities and ownership of our current community. From sitting courtside at Stanford University to brainstorming service projects in the classroom, our Brothers are learning that their presence matters. Whether they are cheering at a collegiate game or holding a peer accountable after school, they are stepping up as active participants in their own success stories.

College Access: The Stanford Experience

On November 21st, our IYT Brothers, alongside peers from Davis and Modesto High Schools, explored the prestigious grounds of Stanford University.

The day was packed with immersive experiences designed to demystify elite higher education:

  • Academic Exposure: Brothers attended a presentation in a real lecture hall, getting a feel for the university learning environment.

  • Career Readiness: They participated in an interview panel, gaining insights into professional development.

  • The Celebration: The tour concluded with an exciting basketball game where our Brothers enjoyed courtside seats and even received a special shout-out during the game!

Workshop Spotlight: Project Impact

Brainstorming for a Better Community

Brothers were put into groups and all had a mentor with them to help them with the workshop and keep them on track.

In our recent "Project Impact" workshop, Brothers were challenged to think beyond themselves. Divided into groups, they were assigned one of three critical areas: School Impact, Community Service, or Peer Support.

Each group was tasked with brainstorming a project that would drive meaningful change in their assigned area. This exercise wasn't just about planning; it was a practical lesson in creativity, collaboration, and the leadership skills necessary to turn an idea into action.

Brother Angel

11th Grade

Brother Angel is the definition of consistency and care. A member of IYT since middle school, he continues to demonstrate deep commitment to the brotherhood.

While maintaining his academics, Brother Angel shows us daily what it means to be a leader. He is constantly present after school, not just for himself, but to help hold his Brothers accountable. He genuinely cares for his peers, often sharing concerns with mentors to ensure everyone gets the support they need. His leadership is quiet but powerful—driven by a desire to see everyone win.

Congratulations, Brother Angel! Your positive spirit makes you a true inspiration to the program.
