Associate Professor, UW Madison

"The work will always be there, but your opportunity to have an impact is always fleeting. With heightened disparities magnified since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to champion the healthy development and future of Black boys is a clarion call that must be answered."

Captain Shannon Blackamore

Capt. of Police, City of Madison Police Dept.

"I believe that it is vitally important to lift others as we climb.  This program provides an opportunity to mentor and instill confidence in our young brothers that will last for generations.  The time spent working and mentoring our young men will provide opportunities to expose them to leadership opportunities and knowledge from professionals that have struggled through some of the same hardships.  As a young man that grew up in the poverty-stricken areas of Chicago, I have an appreciation for those that took time out to provide me guidance, knowledge, and instruction, which helped catapult me into a very successful member of the community and leader within our police department."

Frances Huntley-Cooper

Retired

"Our young black and brown males need a lot of support, tough love, and direction to navigate growing up Black in America.  If I can help out in any small way, I am happy to serve!"

Joe Gothard

Superintendent, MMSD

"As a Madison native, I intimately understand how essential the mission of IYT is for our community's young men. My commitment is deeply rooted in the conviction that our young men in MMSD require spaces where they can thrive, not just survive. This directly aligns with one of the district's goals of belonging, ensuring students feel they belong in their school. IYT is critical because it breaks the cycle by providing spaces for young men to be their authentic selves, fostering the sense of belonging and community that is foundational to success.  For young men of color, feeling seen, heard, and valued is essential. It counters negative societal narratives and provides a mirror reflecting their inherent worth and potential. Mentors, as trusted figures, create a safe space where self-doubt is replaced by self-efficacy and a clear understanding of their place and purpose in the world. IYT is more than a program; it is the essential pathway for guiding our young men from our classrooms to college, career, and the community. Their success is a measure of our collective commitment to a more equitable future."
