Month in Review: Community, Trust, & Academic Growth

February at Edison High School was all about relying on the Brotherhood and stepping up to the plate. From navigating loud environments in our trust workshops to celebrating culture in San Luis Obispo, our young men are learning that they can achieve incredible things when they lean on one another.

Celebrating Culture & Leadership: Black Joy Event & Welcoming New Leaders

This month, we took Brothers from Edison and Stagg High Schools to the Black Joy event in San Luis Obispo, where we celebrated community, culture, and connection together!

We are also incredibly excited to officially welcome our new Junior Mentors: Brother Jonathan, Brother Gavin, and Brother Alejandro, who are eager to make a positive impact in our program. To cap it all off, we enjoyed some downtime playing football after school at Edison, creating memorable moments and strengthening our Brotherhood even further.

Navigating the Noise: Blindfolded Trust Exercise

During our workshop this month, the Brothers engaged in a highly interactive trust exercise!

The activity required four Brothers to be blindfolded as they attempted to navigate their way to a specific colored piece of paper. The catch? They had to do it by strictly listening to the directions of their team captain in a loud, distracting environment. It was a fantastic way to practice clear communication, active listening, and putting trust in our leaders when we can't see the path ahead.

Keeping Promises: Brother Zymir

We would love to give a massive shoutout to our second-year student, Brother Zymir!

He made a promise to raise his grades if we allowed him to join the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo trip, and he absolutely delivered. He turned his grades around and currently holds an impressive 3.5 GPA! It is so great to see his motivation skyrocket, and we cannot wait to see how he continues to excel as he moves forward into his senior year.

Brother of the Month

Brother Juan has been named Brother of the Month for his academic excellence, his commitment to IYT, and his ability to showcase the core values of teamwork and great character!

Brother Juan currently boasts a 3.5 GPA and is doing significantly better than he was last semester. Beyond his grades, he has been attending programming much more frequently and even helped bring in two other Brothers who have been consistently attending as part of a strong freshman cohort. We deeply appreciate Brother Juan and the positive presence he brings to the IYT room!
