Month in Review: Legacy & Resilience

February at Foothill High School was all about honoring the past while actively building the future. From taking to the streets for community justice to reframing how we handle personal adversity, our young men and staff are demonstrating what it truly means to lead with intention, integrity, and resilience.

Purpose into Action: March for the Dream at Grant Union

Foothill Brothers participated in the March for the Dream at Grant Union High School.

IYT staff and mentors proudly took to the streets for the March for the Dream at Grant Union High School, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This wasn’t just a walk—it was a powerful display of purpose, unity, and a continued commitment to justice.

Our mentors showed up with heart, walking alongside students, families, and community members to demonstrate what it means to lead with service and love. Dr. King’s dream thrives in classrooms, in conversations, and in the intentional ways we help our Brothers see themselves as change agents. Marching together was a vivid reminder that we are stronger as a community, and that the work toward equity and opportunity continues every day.

Reframing Adversity: "Purpose Through Pressure"

This month, IYT facilitated the "Purpose Through Pressure" workshop, encouraging students to rethink challenges and recognize how adversity builds character. The session emphasized a powerful truth: pressure does not break us—it shapes us.

During the interactive “Pressure Reveals Skills” activity, students collaborated to analyze real-life setbacks (like failing a test) and uncover the skills those experiences develop. The workshop concluded with a reflective exercise where students identified their personal support systems by completing the sentence: "When pressure shows up, I persevere by using ______ and leaning on ______."

Key Workshop Benefits:

  • Strengthened students’ resilience and growth mindset.

  • Encouraged meaningful peer-to-peer dialogue about overcoming adversity.

  • Reinforced the vital importance of support systems and connection.

  • Built self-awareness around personal strengths and coping strategies.

Our Brothers Isaiah M., Javis J., Jamere R., Vincent W., and Cecil B. are stepping up as true role models! The Jr. Mentorship Program, supported by the Governor’s Office, gives students the chance to guide younger peers while developing their own leadership skills.

IYT was selected to partner in this statewide effort, providing a stipend for our Brothers as they mentor, support, and inspire the next generation. These young men are showing immense dedication and responsibility, proving that mentorship is as much about growing themselves as it is about uplifting others.
