Month in Review: Trust & Accountability

January at Jesse Bethel High School was all about taking ownership. Whether learning to trust a peer during a high-stakes team-building activity or holding oneself accountable during academic time, our Brothers demonstrated exactly what it means to lead.

Life Skills: The Blindfold Challenge

Students participated in a Blindfold Challenge designed to strengthen trust, communication, and leadership within the Brotherhood. In small groups, one student was blindfolded while others guided them safely through a designated course using only verbal directions. Success depended on active listening, patience, and teamwork. Students who were blindfolded practiced vulnerability, while the guides stepped into leadership roles.

The Takeaway: A reflective discussion followed the activity, connecting the game to real-life situations. Students shared insights about how trust is built over time, how miscommunication creates setbacks, and how leadership involves taking responsibility for others—lessons that directly apply to their classrooms, athletic teams, and future careers.

Academic Achievement: Brother David

The Study Hall Scholar

Focus, accountability, and commitment have been on full display during our 30-minute study hall sessions this month, and a special highlight goes to David Mallory. David consistently uses his time productively to complete assignments, review class material, and seek clarification. Instead of treating study hall as free time, he approaches it as an opportunity to stay ahead. His discipline and intentional approach are setting the tone for the rest of the room. Inspired by his focus, other students have stepped up to tackle missing assignments and collaborate effectively with peers. David is proving that dedication and focus truly pay off!

MLK Day Service

IYT Bay Area had the pleasure of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service. We partnered with California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, and the City of Richmond, California to restore Parchester Park in Richmond, CA. The IYT team did painting, gardening and filled the playground with fresh mulch to give the Parchester community a welcoming and safe space. It is with gratitude and pride that I am encouraged to say, "We are always stronger and better when we work together and serve."

Brother of the Month

Brother Jeremih, 9th grader at Jesse Bethel High School.
