Month in Review: Solidarity & Strength

February at Mesa Verde High School was all about honoring the past while actively building the future. From taking to the streets for community justice to reframing how we handle personal adversity, our young men and staff are demonstrating what it truly means to lead with intention, integrity, and resilience.

Putting Purpose into Action: March for the Dream at Grant Union High School

IYT proudly took a stand for justice and unity during the March for the Dream at Grant Union High School, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This powerful event was more than a walk; it was a collective affirmation of purpose, solidarity, and continued commitment to equity.

Our mentors showed up not only in person but in spirit, walking alongside students, families, and community members while embodying what it means to lead with integrity, service, and love. As an organization dedicated to uplifting young men of color, participating in this march reminded us that our daily work, mentorship, advocacy, family engagement, and academic support, is part of a larger movement toward opportunity and justice. Dr. King’s dream lives on through action, and marching together was a visible reminder that we are stronger in community.

Reframing Adversity: "Purpose Through Pressure"

This month, IYT Brothers tackled challenges head-on during Purpose Through Pressure, a workshop designed to help students reframe adversity as an opportunity for growth. The session focused on the idea that pressure does not break us—it shapes us.

During the interactive “Pressure Reveals Skills” activity, students worked in teams to analyze real-life scenarios (like failing a test or facing setbacks) and identify the skills those experiences could build. Rather than focusing on failure, students practiced identifying growth opportunities. The workshop wrapped up with a reflective “How I Keep Going” exercise where students shared lessons pressure has taught them, completing the sentence: "When pressure shows up, I persevere by using ______ and leaning on ______."

Key Workshop Benefits:

  • Strengthened students’ resilience and growth mindset.

  • Encouraged peer-to-peer dialogue about overcoming adversity.

  • Reinforced the importance of support systems and connection.

  • Built self-awareness around personal strengths and coping strategies.
