Month in Review: Ownership & Opportunity

January at Rio Calaveras was defined by two concepts: taking ownership of the present and preparing for the opportunities of the future. From 8th graders walking the halls of a high school to 7th graders learning to advocate for their grades, the Brotherhood is stepping up.

High School Visit: A Glimpse of the Future

IYT’s 8th graders embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Chavez High School, getting a firsthand look at the opportunities that await them. During the visit, students explored the campus, observed classes in action, and enjoyed a lively performance by the school's Mariachi band. They connected with high school staff and students who shared honest experiences about the transition. This experience left our 8th graders feeling more confident as they get ready to take the next step in their academic journey.

Bonus: To ensure they are ready for the work ahead, several Brothers were blessed with backpacks filled with school supplies—thoughtful gifts designed to support their academic growth!

Life Skills: The Power of Self-Advocacy

Success isn't just about knowing the answer; it's about knowing how to ask the question. Brothers recently took part in an engaging workshop on self-advocacy. They learned practical strategies to improve their grades, such as:

  • Asking questions in class.

  • Checking in with teachers.

  • Utilizing tutoring sessions.

By the end of the session, participants left with a clear understanding that advocating for themselves is a skill that sets the foundation for success.

Academic Achievement: Brother Isaiah

The Self-Advocate Speaking of advocacy, Isaiah Harrison has made IYT proud this month by putting those exact skills into practice. Isaiah has shown incredible determination by advocating for himself, asking for help when needed, and actively participating in tutoring. He has taken full responsibility for his learning, proving that remarkable maturity comes from owning your academic progress.
